Northamptonshire, located in the East Midlands of England, boasts a rich and fascinating history spanning over a thousand years. The town of Northampton itself began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement known as Hamm tun, meaning “the village by the well-watered meadow.” Later renamed North Hamm tun—likely to differentiate it from Southampton—the name gradually evolved into Northampton. By 1100, it had become a walled town, complete with a castle on the banks of the River Nene.
The county is also renowned as the birthplace of the British shoemaking industry, a craft with a legacy dating back nearly 900 years. Today, it remains home to iconic brands such as Weetabix, Carlsberg, and Dr. Martens. Interestingly, Northampton even served as the capital of England for a brief period.
